Winter Storage Tips for Vehicles

Storage for vehicles during the winter is not as simple as it sounds. Vehicles require proper protection from winter elements. Some owners even do not drive specific vehicles during the colder months. The risks are too many. white car parked beside white concrete building during daytime

Snow, sleet, hail, and wind threaten high-valued vehicles. This can reduce the value of the car. To avoid that, store the vehicle properly. There are several things to consider doing before you put the car away for the season, though.

Choose the Right Location

Whenever possible, ensure the vehicle is out of light, sun, and moisture. A dry building is best. For very valuable cars, temperature control is important. For most other cars, a moisture-tight building is critical. Look for a storage facility that is strong enough to withstand temperature changes. Locations should also be off the ground in some cases. High-value, rare, or otherwise important vehicles stored on ramps may minimize tire damage. Also make sure the storage facility is clean and tidy.

Clean Up First

Before storing, clean the interior and exterior of the vehicle. Remove all grime and dirt. Shine it. Then, turn to the interior. Remove all debris and vacuum. This is a good time to have the upholstery cleaned. Consider the engine next. Be sure it is clean and in good working order. Check the oil and plugs. Repairing these now helps reduce the risk in the long term.

Tackle Maintenance and Repairs Now

Before putting the vehicle away for the winter, have all repairs done early. Do not store them and wait until next year. This can worsen the problem. Instead, focus on choosing a reputable professional. Have any normal preventative maintenance handled first. Then, make repairs to the vehicle as necessary. A detailed consultation and inspection from a licensed technician helps.

Check the Body Work

The body of the vehicle plays a role in protecting it long term. Be sure it is clean. Beyond that, make any repairs possible to remove rust or scratches. This helps preserve the paint. It also helps preserve the steel. This saves money but also helps keep the vehicle in the most pristine quality possible.

Do Routine Checkups

Fill the tires with the proper amount of air. Check them at least once a month in storage. Top up all of the fluids. Do not leave containers empty. Be sure to check the oil, too. A clean oil of the highest quality is a good idea here.

Auto insurance is there for accidents. It can cover most types of risks. However, proper storage can reduce the number of auto insurance claims you have to make. Reduce claims by taking good care when storing a vehicle over the winter months. This extra effort pays off for many years to come.
